How did public entertainment change in the byzantine empire?

While gladiator fights and chariot racing stayed quite popular, the mediums with which art was made changed. Due to the expansion of public schooling, poor children were afforded the same education as the rich, led to the highest literacy level in years. Polo became very popular, even though only nobility was allowed to participate.
