The grasshopper needs about 6 weeks to reach adulthood. The time that each phase of the metamorphosis lasts depends a lot on the environmental conditions, like the temperature. The butterfly to become an adult needs to be protected in a sheltered place to become a chrysalis. In this state is not fed, and undergoes metabolic and morphological changes, this is called metamorphosis. The adult butterfly comes out breaking the external skeleton of the chrysalis.

the main difference between the development of a butterfly and a locust is, butterfly undergoes complete metamorphosis which has four distinctive stages, egg, larvae pupa and adult. on the other hand grasshopper undergoes incomplete metamorphosis that consists of three stages, egg, nymph and adult. the early stages of a butterfly do not resemble the adult whereas the nymph looks like a smaller adult grasshopper.
