Let's assume

number of cookies in the beginning =x

Larry ate 1/3 Of the cookies

so, the remaining cookies are

=x-(1)/(3) x

=(2)/(3) x

now, we have

Barry ate 1/4 Of the remaining cookies

so, the remaining cookies are

=(2)/(3) x-(1)/(4)*(2)/(3) x

=(2)/(3) x-(1)/(6) x

=(2*2)/(3*2) x-(1)/(6) x

=(4)/(6) x-(1)/(6) x

=(3)/(6) x

=(1)/(2) x

Terry ate 1/2 Of the remaining cookies

so, the remaining cookies are

=(1)/(2) x-(1)/(2)*(1)/(2) x

=(1)/(2) x-(1)/(4) x

=(1)/(4) x

Mrs James found the tray with 6 cookies left

so, the remained cookies =6

so, we get

(1)/(4) x=6

x=24

Hence ,

number of cookies were on the tray when Mrs James first left it on the counter are 24.............Answer
