Why would flatboats not work on all means of river transportation

They couldn't go upriver well.  Farmers would usually make a (pretty basic) flatboat to bring their crops to the market downriver, and then take the boat apart and sell the pieces of wood because the boat wouldn't be able to go back upstream.
