The 3rd crusades was an attempt by European leaders to conquer the holy land, but it failed to capture Jerusalem. After the 3rd crusade Richard and Saladin finalized a treaty to handover the control to the area to Muslims. The treaty allowed unarmed Christian pilgrims and merchants to visit the city.
