What is the importance of the mississippi river as a transportation route for the growing nation?

The Mississippi river goes through all of the states in America so it's the easiest way to get around from one state to another. The importance was enormous. Without roads, river travel provides the only easy way to move large volumes of cargo or any heavy cargo.
