The period was one of rapid industrialization. Advances occurred in telegraph, railroad, gas and water supply and sewage systems. For instance, the expansion of telegraph lines allowed for the movement of people and ideas. It led to globalization. The period also witnessed the growth and expansion of the electrical industry, the telephone and assembly line.
