The battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC during the first Persian invasion into Greek territory. The Greek army defeated a much more numerous Persian army. Historians place importance in the fact that Athens won this battle without help from Sparta, without which victory had previously seemed impossible, thus giving citizens from Athens a deeper trust in their own military capabilities.
