Western European countries integrated their economies after 1945 by the French proposing that the nations that produced most of Western Europe's steel and coal unite their facilities. In 1952, France, West Germany, Italy, and the Low Countries formed the European Coal and Steel Community. A central authority regulated production and prices, and members not charge each other tariffs on coal and steel.
