In To Kill A Mockingbird, chapter 26 question 1) In her lesson on Hitler,Miss Gates says that “we( American people) don’t believe in persecuting anyone”.What seems odd to the reader about this claim?

I would say her claim is odd because in the whole book the towns pople are showing hostility and anger towards people of color and to atticus when he defends the colored person. So they are being racist and yet miss gates says that they are not showing any signs of persecution when the definition for it is hostility and ill-treatment, especially because of race or political or religious beliefs.
