Why is it important that egg and sperm only have on set of chromosomes?

Because body cells are supposed to have 46 chromosomes! So the sex cells will have 23 so that when there nuclei fuse together the 23 chromosomes from the egg and the 23 chromosomes from the sperm will add together to leave you with 46! Just like a normal body cell
