5% of 235 is: 235*(5/100)= 235/20 = 11,75 or 5% of 470 is: 470/20 = 23,5

Total cost = 2*(235 + 11,75) = 2*246,75 = 493,5 or Total cost = 470 + 23,5 = 493,5

Answer:

493.50

Explanation:

One Way Cost = $235.00

Both ways = 2 * 235 = 470

Now is the time to add the tax. You only pay a tax when goods or services have been exchanged. So the return ticket and the one way are when you pay.

Sales Tax = 470 * 5/100 = 23.50

The total ticket cost = cost + sales tax = 470 + 23.50 = 493.50

======================

You can do this in one step

Recognize that the total amount is 105% or 1.05 * Cost of the ticket.

1.05 * 470 = 493.50 just as it was before. Doing it the long way might be easier to understand but eventually you should shorten the process.
