so the simple equation is

(tip ^ this symbol means squared)

a^2+b^2=c^2

now plug in what you know

a^2+1^2=5/4^2

simplify

a^2+1=25/16

-1 -1

a^2=9/16

a=.75

or 3/4

hope I was helpful
