The purpose of colonization, supposedly was to install the European way of life and values on the Natives and civilize them by assimilation. In reality, the colonizers did not care about the integrity of Natives, treated them as savages and were only concerned with wiping them out of the region for economic gain.

In Heart of Darkness, there are plenty of examples that detail how ineffective colonizers were at integrating their own culture onto theirs: like the time Europeans intended to build a railway line in Congo and "prepared" the grounds by unnecessarily blowing up with gunpowder a whole region that was of no interference. In general they did not care at all for their well being, letting them starve and die.

Hope this helps out!
