Final answer:

The namelessness of the man in the story is significant because it emphasizes humans' cosmic insignificance and the idea that they are often trapped by circumstances and powerless to change their predetermined outcome.

Step-by-step explanation:

In literature, the namelessness of a character can have various significances, and in this case, the significance of the namelessness of the man in the story is related to the theme of cosmic insignificance. According to the excerpt provided, naturalistic works often depict humans as small and insignificant in the face of an all-powerful nature. By not giving the man a name, the author emphasizes his lack of importance and reinforces the idea that humans are often trapped by circumstances and powerless to change their predetermined outcome. So, the correct answer is C. The author wants the message of the story to apply to everyone, not just the main character.

In stories it is getting more and more popular not to give the protagonist a real name. Throughout history, we have gotten used to the stories with the familiar names, like Harry Potter, William Tell, Pippi Longstocking, etc, but now we live in different times. The nameless man is now in stories. Why?

C. The author wants the message of the story to apply to everyone, not just the main character.

This could be a reason to keep the protagonist unnamed, but also for keeping the focus on the message in the story and not the person perse.
