In the book (To Kill A Mockingbird) to what extent was Magellan free to speak the truth?

(PLEASE HELP)

Magellan limited her from speaking the truth because of her fear of her father who is an alcoholic and abusive. She was afraid to speak the truth because she feared that her father would beat her.
