Tobacco was the king in the colony of Jamestown, Virginia, which was the first English colony in the Americas. It was founded in 1607 and was named after King James. The colony was sponsored by the Virginia Company of London. Tobacco crops represented the most important source of income for the colony. It was a good cash crop. History says that it was John Rolfe who brought some tobacco seeds from the Caribbean island of Trinidad and seeded them in Jamestown. The crops were an absolute success. Tobacco grown in Virginia was well accepted in England and was exported permanently.
