¨The White Man´s Burden¨ is a poem written by Rudyard Kipling, a British poet and writer, describing the sentiment of a colonizer who goes to foreign lands and peoples to colonize them. The act of colonizing another people different than one´s own is not repaid with gratitude nor with celebration. Colonization is a violent and exploitative act. As such, those who colonize others do so believing that they are doing it for a purpose other than to receive positive feedback. Specifically, the poem´s meaning is meant to suggest that the reward of colonization for the colonizer is in knowing that they have civilized others unlike them.
