Another name for the organization of African unity is African Union.

In the African continent the African union encompasses 55 countries with exception of various territories of European possessions located in Africa. The bloc was founded in Ethiopia and was launched in South Africa. The primary objective of the African union was to replace Organisations of African Unity.

This bloc was announced in the Sirte Declaration in Sirte, Libya on 9 September 1999.
