Carolyn wants to bake some chocolate chip cookies. She wonders if shortening or butter produces a chewier cookie. Usually she uses butter, but today she decides to conduct an experiment and bake two batches of cookies - one with shortening and one with butter. What is an example of an independent variable in this experiment? Which is the control group, and which is the experimental group?

The independent variable would be whether she used butter or shortening. The control group is the cookies with butter and the experimental group is the cookies with the shortening.

Answer:

Shortening and butter is independent variable because the cookies are dependent on these 2 items. the control group is butter because usually butter is used in cookies but now she is controlling it and trying shortening. Experimental group is shortening because she don't usually use shortening but now she wants to check that whether shortening makes chewier cookies or not.
