How was christopher columbus‘s route to asia different from those of earlier explores

His revolutionary idea was based around the fact that the Earth is round, so as long as he goes west across the Atlantic he will at one point reach Asia. What he did not predict is that in the middle was a huge continet that we now know as The Americas. All the other explorers took a route south, around Africa.
