Indentured servants aka indentured laborers were mostly imported European people with a covenant or agreement to work for a long period of time in exchange for passages, shelter, food, clothing and some times a portion of land in the end.

It was necessary as a source of cheap labor for land owners and planters in the construction and setlement of european colonies in the New World at first, and when it didnt work anymore, then colonists appealed to racial slavery to supply that cheap labor.
