Jain laity (householders) are those who want to live the teachings of Jainism, but do not want to practice of asceticism that monks engage in because they want to retain some attachments to the physical world. For them, there are twelve vows that they can take in order to show their devotion and lead good lives. There are five anuvratas, three guna-vratas and four shikhsa-vratas.

Some examples of these are: non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, chastity and non-attachment.
