There is a system called checks and balances (made so no branch can become more powerful then the other branch) There are 3 branches, Judicial, Executive, and then the Legislative.
The Executive branch has the president within it, also please keep in mind supreme court members are within the judicial branch. The executive branch can appoint federal judges, which is one way they have a "check" power over the "supreme court".
