No titles or nobility really existed in the colonies in America. There were equal opportunities for everybody except for slaves. Most people worked in their farms, lived modestly but there was no poverty or inequity. There were skilled artisans, merchants, farmers, and few unskilled workers. So to improve their social status, people depended upon transportation and communication. It was very important for them to be communicated.
