Pennsylvania and Virginia

Most German settlers were in Pennsylvania and the western portion of Virginia. There were some in Maryland, New York, New Jersey, and North Carolina as well.

German settlers began arriving in the British colonies during the 17th century. The largest population of Germans settled in Pennsylvania and created the Pennsylvania Dutch and Mennonite populations. German settlers were typically farmers and brought their families to the colonies to create German farming communities.
