what did william jennings bryan mean when he stated you shall not crucify mankind on a cross of gold in famous 1896 speech

In his speech he denounced the gold standard. He supported bimemetallism so when he said "You shall not crucify mankind on a cross of gold" he was saying that we needed to stop using gold so much.
