What factor made it most difficult for soldiers to cross the area between the trenches

That's called No Man's Land. What made it extremely difficult to get to the other side of it was the fact that hundreds of guns were shooting at you. No Man's Land was full of craters from grenade blasts, some filled with water making it difficult to tell them apart from the solid ground.
