It contributed to the end of the Cold War. Glasnost or "openness" gave the people and media of the Soviet Union the freedom to talk about things openly much like freedom of speech in America. This allowed reporters and journalists openly talk about the conditions and corrupt government officials. The increasing reports of crimes by the government caused people to panic. It eventually helped cause the fall of the Soviet Union and the Cold War.
