The Battle of Shiloh in Tennesee.
This battle was known as the costliest land battle of the American Civil War and it was the first major battle to take place in the 'Western Theater of War'. The Confederate forces had launched a surprise attack on the Union and although the Union forces ultimately won, the number of men lost damaged Ulysses S Grant's rising military reputation.
Hope this helps!
