When doing a multi-step equation it does matter which order the operations are performed because you could get a very different answer if you do not do it correctly. The correct way to do it is PEMDAS, P, (Parenthesis), E,( Exponents), M,( Multiply), D, ( Division), A, ( Addition), and SSubtractionon.

The operations performed should be in a specific order. think of PEMDAS. 1) Parentheses. 2) Exponents. 3) Multiplication. 4) Division. 5) Addition. 6) Subtraction. Although multiplication and division can be performed in whichever order occurs first, same with addition and subtraction.
