While on the beagle, Darwin was influenced by a book by Charles Lyell that suggested that Earth was old and sculpted by geologic processes that continue today. Charles Lyell was believer in uniformitarianism, which means that he believed that geological and biological "causes," or forces, have always been working in the same way and with the same intensity.
