Angles 83 and y are on the same side and are interior to the transversal and are called interior angles on same side of transversal .These type of angles are supplementary ,that is they add to 180 degrees.

83+y=180

With y we have 83 added .

Subtracting 83 both sides we have y=97 degrees.
