Deforestation was taking place in the United States at an alarming rate. According to Roosevelt, this would have catastrophic consequences for America's natural resources.

The square deal had 3 basic aims:

1. Conservation of Natural Resources

2. Control of Large corporations

3. To protect the General Consumer

He tried to extend the square deal in his second term but it was blocked by the Congress.
