The part of brain that loses volume when gyri narrow and sulci wider is the cerebral cortex. This process causes Alzheimer's disease. In this disease there is progressive death of brain cells over a period of time. Short term memory begins to fade in the early stages. But in the final stages people fail to recognize faces and communication.
