Ovid was banished in 8 AD from Rome to Tomis by decree of the emperor Augustus as a result of his writings. Although the reasons for his banishment are uncertain, it is believed that his writings irritated the conservative members of Roman society. His writing of Ars Armatoria is believed to have enraged the emperor.
