The behavior in which adolescents are often characterized as impulsive and emotional may be due to immature development in the prefrontal cortex area of the brain. It is the cerebral cortex which covers the front part of the frontal lobe.
The adolescent's actions are guided more by the emotional and reactive amygdala and less by the thoughtful, logical frontal cortex.
