How did variations in bird beak types affect survival of the birds?

For example, vultures need beaks that are able to rip off flesh from animals, parakeet beaks need to be able to handle small seeds and fruits, pelicans have large beaks in order to catch fish. Without these certain types of beaks these birds couldn't get the food they need, therefore they would perish.
