To solve this, we are going to use the distance of a free fallen object:
d=0.5gt^2
where

d is the distance

g is the gravity of the Earth
9.8m/s^2

t is the time in seconds

We know form our problem that a cat falls out of a tree and takes 1.4 seconds to land,
t=1.4. Lets replace that value in our formula to find
d:

d=0.5gt^2

d=0.5(9.8)(1.4)^2

d=9.604 meters

We can conclude that the cat fell a distance of 9.604 meters.
