Nyerere introduced ujamaa which can be translated to mean "togetherness" or "being a family" in Tanzania. As a result, Nyerere established a socialist economic system in Tanzania. The ujamaa system was based on village cooperatives aimed at promoting equality of opportunity and self-help.
