Renaissance city-states are independent and powerful cities in Italy that ruled its surrounding territory which include Florence, Milan, Venice, Naples, and Rome. They conducted their own trade, made their own laws and collected their own taxes. Some are governed by elected councils. Sometimes a group of rich merchants, guilds or powerful families ruled the cities.
