Lawrence Kohlberg defined three stages of moral development.
Kohlberg would most likely classify a child who was most interested in his or her own personal pleasure in the preconventional level of moral reasoning.
The preconventional level is the first level. Children don’t have a personal code of morality in this period and their code is shaped by the standards of adults and the consequences of following or breaking their rules.
