The amount of violence and the casualties that the first world war was something that the world had never seen, also a war fought in different continents and involving so many countries, they didn´t realize that it was actually a World War so they called the Great War, before the second one happened, when a similar thing happened in second world war, the name of great war would be changed to World War 1.
