How might a college acknowledge a students clep score

I'm not sure what you mean by "acknowledge" but, when you first register for the CLEP, you are asked to choose which colleges you want to send your scores to. Once they are available, they are usually sent over to those selected colleges.

I would assume colleges take the exam into consideration similarly to the SATs but while it does play a role in decision making, it is not the overarching factor.
