In the nitrogen cycle the transformation of gaseous nitrogen into nitrogen containing compound is performed primarily by Bacteria. This process is called nitrogen fixation, which involves the conversion of atmospheric nitrogen into nitrogen compounds such as ammonia and nitrates by certain bacteria, such as Rhizobium bacteria in the roots nodules of legumes. These bacteria are capable of transforming atmospheric nitrogen into usable forms by plants.
