December 29th,1845.was 28th state. Mexico controlled the territory until 1836 then Texas won its independence becoming an independent republic. Spanish missionaries were the first European settlers founding San Antonio in 1718. the states annexation it set off a chain of events that led to Mexican- American war in 1846.
