The American Revolution showed the French that revolt could be successful, thus giving the motivation to rebel.

For example, The Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen (written by the National Assembly in the beginning of the revolution) was heavily influenced by the American Revolution. It urged to create a constitutional monarchy, freedom of speech/press, Natural Rights, and so on.
