The ovum or egg cell is the part of female reproductive gamete present in oogamous organisms. The ovum is larger, and visible to the naked eye compare to motile sperm cell, and egg cell are not capable of active movement.

The cytoplasm of an unfertilized egg is contain unevenly distributed proteins, mRNA, other organelles, and substances. Many proteins are present in a concentrated form at the one end of the cell, and helping to provide positional information to the growing embryo.
