Whats the difference between a search engine, a metasearch engine, and a subject directory.

A metasearch engine searches several other search engines and/or databases, returning results from all of those they search. A subject directory is created by humans, not search "bots," and selects only sites that have been reviewed and meet specific criteria for inclusion on the site.
