The sales tax is $3.2 and total cost is $ 43.2

Solution:

Given, An item sells for 40$

And sales tax on the item is 8 %

We have to find what is the sales tax and total cost

Now, we know that, sales tax = 8% of selling price

\begin{array}{l}{\text { Sales tax }=(8)/(100) * \text { selling price }} \\\\ {\text { Sales tax }=(8)/(100) * 40} \\\\ {\text { Sales tax }= 3.2}\end{array}

Now, sales tax = $ 3.2, then,

Total final cost = selling price + sales tax

Total cost = 40 + 3.2

Total cost = $ 43.2

Hence, sales tax and total cost are $3.2 and $43.2 respectively.
